The international conference "Interacting Binary Stars - 2007"
This conference is planned for August 12-18, 2007.
This year, due to absence of the IAU support, it will be a significant part of the larger conference "Modern Problems of Astronomy".
The official languages are Ukrainian, Russian and English.
The conference continues the sequence of
annual scientific symposia on different topics held in Odessa
since 1982. Some of these conferences had been dedicated to
the memory of Prof. V.P.Tsessevich (1907-1983), the prominent
astronomer, who contributed greatly to the field of research
of binary and single variable stars of different types.
The main topics of the conference reflect modern trends in
investigation of interacting binaries with variable components
of different types and in elaboration of new equipment and methods
of mathematical modeling. We hope that the conference will point
out new prospects for current research in the third Millennium
and will strengthen impact of the international collaboration
in the field.
The conference will be held in the beautiful city Odessa founded at
the Black Sea shore in 1794. This is an important scientific,
educational, cultural and business center with a suitable train and air
connection and nearly 1.5 million inhabitants. The conference is
organized by the Department of Astronomy and Astronomical Observatory
of the Odessa National University (founded in 1865)
of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine;
the Odessa Astronomical Society;
Ukrainian Astronomical Association;
Euro-Asian Astronomical Society. The financial support is provided
by the International Astronomical Union.
Invited reviews of main problems of modern research of binary stars
are expected to be given at plenary sessions. Parallel and poster
sessions covering will also be organized during the Conference.
The scientific program includes theory, observations, and their
confrontation. The working language is English. The invited talks are expected to be of a duration of 30-40 min,
contributed talks of 15-20 minutes, and oral presentation of posters of
5 minutes. The overhead projector, as well as a PC with a parallel TV
monitor and a multimedia projector will be allowed for the sections.

The Registration fee is USD 250 (complete for participants) and USD 150 (for accompanying persons).
A limited financial support could be available as the IAU Travel Grants.
The SOC will inform you on the possible support upon your application.
The conference site
The LOC in Odessa will try to do their best and make every
participant to feel extraordinary atmosphere of our city, its
spirit of freedom and keep interest in the search for nonstandard
solutions.
The Conference is planed to be held in the Conference Hall,
3km from the center of Odessa, 600m from the Black Sea shore.
It takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the Conference cite
from the city hotels.
August is the most pleasant summer month in our city. The weather
in August is usually pleasant, with maximum temperature near 30 C
and minimum near 20 C. Rain is quite possible, but generally light.
The sea temperature is usually 22-25C, the weather is fine and not too
hot permitting to combine a participation in the conference and a
good relaxation.
Before our conference, the Summer School "Astrophysics, Cosmology and
Astrobiology" dedicated to George Gamow is planed (August 13-17, 2007).
It will be based in the student summer hostel "Chernomorka" of the
Odessa National University, which is located at the border of Odessa
(50-60 min from the center). It is a good opportunity to attend both events.
Visa and travel
All visitors to Ukraine require a passport and those ones, who are not
the citizens of the New Independent States (NIS) republics, may require a visa. In case of doubt, the participants are strongly advised to check early with their travel agent or with the nearest Ukrainian embassy. It is the responsibility of each individual participant to legalize his stay in the Ukraine. For an official invitation for Your visa application, please send to the organizers the information required by the Ukrainian Embassy.
Odessa has an international airport with direct flights from Moscow,
Kiev, Athens, Vienna, Varsaw (Warszawa), Budapest, Tel Aviv, Istanbul,
Frankfurt and some other cities. The capital of Ukraine, Kiev, has regular airline
connections with most of European countries. It takes around an hour
to get Odessa from Kiev with the domestic Ukrainian airlines
(from another airport Zhylyany), and it takes a night by the intercity
train with sleeping cars. Please check a suitable route with your local
travel agent. In any case, participants are advised to book early, as
August is a high tourist season in Ukraine.
